Natural Ways to Whiten Your Teeth

Your teeth will inevitably yellow over time. Not to worry, there are several ways you can halt the process – with dedication, It is even possible to reverse it.

Although you can purchase tooth-whitening kits at most pharmacies, there are several natural remedies you can use to protect your tooth enamel and remove stubborn stains.

Here are some tips to help you whiten your teeth naturally:

Dietary Changes

You can prevent staining your teeth further by eliminating beverages and foods that contain tannin from your diet – such as tea, red wine, dark soda, coffee, and juices.

Your enamel can also be worn down if you consume a lot of acidic foods. By consuming a lot of soda, coffee and citrus, you could also be at risk of yellowing your teeth. To be on the safe side, you can brush your teeth whenever you consume any of the above.

The ideal thing to do is to wait for 30 minutes after eating before you brush your teeth. The reason is that acids weaken the enamel, therefore, by brushing immediately, you can add to the damage.

If you’re a smoker, you can quit smoking or taking tobacco products to reduce nicotine stains on your teeth. This way, you get to avoid gum disease and tooth decay, both of which can cause oral health issues and damage the enamel.

Oil pulling

The practice of oil pulling has been around for some time now. It is done by swirling oil around the mouth for a few minutes – usually coconut oil – to remove bacteria, dirt or debris. This shouldn’t be a substitute for flossing or regular brushing.

Baking Soda

You can use baking soda to clean stains on your teeth with great results. Some people say baking soda is a little too harsh and may wear down the enamel but that has been proven to be untrue.

A research that was carried out in 2017 showed that using baking soda for teeth whitening is not only safe but it’s also efficient. Also, baking soda helps fight bacteria which means that it can stop tooth decay and reduce plaque.

Hydrogen Peroxide

This is a common ingredient that can be found in most homes and can be used to whiten stained teeth. To get the best result, you can brush your teeth with a mix of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Do this for 2 minutes twice daily for a week.

This shouldn’t be done often as hydrogen peroxide increases tooth sensitivity. However, it is not a suitable option for people with sensitive teeth.

Whitening fruits

Bromelain and Papain are enzymes that can be found in pineapples and papayas respectively. A study conducted in 2012 showed that fruits with these ingredients can whiten teeth modestly.
